Measuring social impact design

I worked with YLabs’ Executive and Design Directors to build a comprehensive performance assessment tool for their team of seven designers.

Berkeley, CA- and Kigali, Rwanda-based YLabs Global designs, tests, and advocates for youth-driven solutions that address the biggest challenges to young people’s health and economic opportunity worldwide. Their process is design-driven, but lacked a stable set of criteria against which designers’ performance could be measured.

Clear performance metrics empower team members to understand what’s expected of them, chart their growth, and plan their career. Our goals were:

  1. Identify and map design competencies across levels

  2. Use the matrix to complete one round of design team assessments

  3. Port the matrix into a third-party assessment tool

  4. Integrate this matrix format into other teams
